Ready, set, go, a Sheffield primary school are jumping about after receiving an accreditation for their continued efforts with engagement in promoting PE, School Sport and Physical activity to pupils at the trickiest of times.

Oasis Academy Watermead, situated in Barrie Crescent, Sheffield achieved the Virtual School Games Award for engaging for engaging in an array of programmes, opportunities and general support of pupils to remain active at a time where physical activity across children and young people in the UK plummeted due to a combination of lockdown, colder weather, and dark evenings.

Adam Fuller, Sports Development Manager at Forge Valley School, commented saying; “Whilst there is usually the national School Games Mark Award that all schools can apply for this has sadly been postponed for the past two years due to the pandemic. We decided to create our own local version to celebrate the fact that whilst schools had to juggle everything else, they still found the time to promote physical activity, and the importance of health and wellbeing to their pupils, and Oasis Academy Watermead did just that.”

Oasis Academy Watermead took part in several events such as the South Yorkshire Virtual School Games Week, World Book Day Physical Activity Challenges and upskilling staff in PE and physical activity, all whilst in lockdown.

Adam Dawson, Principal at Oasis Academy Watermead, added; “When our pupils returned in March we used physical education and physical activity to support the return to school, helping pupils reconnect, re-socialise and re-engage in being as active as they possibly can be. The utilised resources provided by the Forge Valley School to engage pupils in wellbeing workshops entitled 'Back Together' where pupils spoke about their health and wellbeing using classroom based fun activities.”
