We want our children to experience the joy of creating and expressing themselves through a wide range of art and design forms. Children will have the opportunity to develop themselves not only as an artist but will also promote their personal attributes particularly patience, resilience and self-control. They will gain an understanding of the historical and religious significance of art and how it has shaped the world today. We want to inspire future artists and designers through the study of a variety of acclaimed individuals who have influenced both culture and range of different professions.
Oasis Academy Watermead is a happy place where learning is fun and exciting. We want our children to sparkle and shine in all that they do. Their enthusiasm and joy in discovering new things will become infectious across our learning community and beyond.
At OA Watermead we believe children are masters of exploration, our curriculum is designed to ignite natural curiosity and a passion for learning through awe and wonder. We have developed an enriched provision to inspire our children. We ensure learning and play experiences are deeply rooted in the world around us strengthening our identity and affirming ‘who am I and who am I becoming?’ We firmly believe in encouraging our children to notice small details in the world around them that will turn the ordinary into extraordinary, taking the time to ‘stand and stare’ and appreciate the beauty in their world. As practitioners we firmly believe children should be immersed in real and meaningful play opportunities and strive to enhance our provision with real and tangible objects. We recognise objects can spark curiosity and a desire to investigate. We take a holistic approach developing natural curiosity whilst taking every opportunity to further our children’s breadth of vocabulary. We value the importance of ensuring that all children have rich first hand experiences fostering an eagerness to explore, discover and imagine. As practitioners we understand the significance of our reactions and interactions, matching the excitement and curiosity displayed by our children, igniting a thirst for knowledge. Childhood is precious and we are privileged to be part of each of our children’s journey.
At Oasis Academy Watermead, we want our pupils to be masters of technology. Technology is everywhere and plays a pivotal role in our pupils’ lives. We model and educate our pupils on how to use technology positively, responsibly and safely. Our pupils will be creators, not consumers, and our curriculum reflects this by encompassing computer science, information technology and digital literacy. Our pupils will understand that there is always a choice when using technology and as a school we utilise technology (and social media) to model positive use. We recognise that education is the best prevention of misuse of technology.
Design and Technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Design and Technology encourages children to learn to think and intervene creatively to solve problems both as individuals and as members of a team. At Watermead, we encourage children to use their creativity and imagination, to design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. We aim to, wherever possible, link work to other disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art.
At Oasis Academy Watermead it is our passion to ensure that every child will become lifelong readers who are competent, enthusiastic and who have a thirst for reading a range of genres, including poetry. Everyone will have the confidence to make reading choices and recommend books to their peers through this understanding and their love of reading. Children will establish an appreciation and love of reading to gain knowledge across the wider curriculum. It is our intention to ensure that, by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject, supporting their forthcoming secondary education and through their life journey.
At Oasis Academy Watermead, we want our children to have a passion for writing and an appreciation of its educational and cultural values. We want our children to be able to communicate through the written word, both as way to share their ideas and emotions and express themselves creatively. A key goal for us is to ensure that our children become familiar with a wide range of high-quality texts which stimulate their writing and enable them to acquire knowledge and build on what they already know. We aim for our children to develop higher order vocabulary skills and have an excellent knowledge of writing techniques. Developing a fluent knowledge and application of grammar and punctuation will support their learning across the curriculum.
We will encourage children to be curious about the world they live in. The children will explore the physical and human environments and features of their locality and worldwide. Children will participate in real life, practical experiences which will allow them to explore their local environment. We will encourage them to understand their place in the world and how this differs from others. The children will understand the role the Earth’s key processes play in their daily lives. At Watermead, the children will be encouraged to become Global Citizens. They will be inspired to think both locally and globally about theirs and other’s impact with a focus on environmental change and a path to a greener future.
At Oasis Academy Watermead, we aim to foster the children’s interest and understanding about the life of people who lived in the past. We will ensure that we provide meaningful experiences to bring history to life. Children will have a sense of chronology and an identity based on their historical heritage locally, nationally and globally. Children will learn to value their own and other people’s cultures in modern multicultural Britain. Children will be prepared to make their own life choices in today’s world and gain an understanding how Britain has developed as a democratic society. The children will think like historians and understand how events in in the past have influenced our lives today.
We aim to ensure children are equipped with the mathematical skills and knowledge they will need in everyday life in a range of different contexts. We want them to foster a love of number and problem solving. Children will appreciate the beauty and power of mathematics to develop a sense of challenge and enjoyment. Children will be able to transfer the skills they develop into other areas of the curriculum. This will support them through their education and their future in the wider world.
Music will be felt in the hearts of our pupils at Watermead. Interwoven within the nine habits, they will develop a lifelong appreciation of the greatest pieces of music. This will inspire pupils to listen more widely and expand upon their musical repertoire. As pupils progress, they will develop their musical preferences and critical ear, allowing them to compose and listen with a greater degree of finesse. Live musical performances will fuel pupil’s growing passion to want to listen and remember more music and also learn an instrument.
Pupils will regularly engage in inspiring music lessons which harness and nurture creativity enabling each pupil to shine as a talented musician. A deep sense of achievement will be experienced by all our pupils as their skill set, knowledge and self-confidence grows.
We will provide children with the opportunity to experience a range of sports and physical activities through a broad and balanced curriculum. We aim to ensure that children participate in daily physical activity to develop their physical literacy and improve their motivation, confidence, knowledge and understanding to support their health and fitness. Children in KS1 will develop their confidence and competence in fundamental movement skills. Children will build upon these skills in KS2 and use them in different ways (e.g. movement sequences) and as part of competitive games. Through PE, children will develop cognitively, emotionally and socially as well as build character through resilience, determination and self-belief.
Physical Education Knowledge Organisers
We will encourage children to recognise and value the importance of thriving in the wider world as young adults. Our children will be enabled to flourish as individuals, friends, family members and valued members of their local community. We will actively promote the British Values, the Equality Act and our Cultural Capital Passport. We will recognise and celebrate the variety of cultures, religions and walks of life that gather within our academy every day. We will use our diverse academy culture to learn from each other and be prepared for the ever-evolving wider world.
We provide a positive space within which the diversity of our communities’ cultures, beliefs, traditions and values can all be celebrated, respected and understood. We will give rich opportunities to children that will allow them to question, consider, explore and reflect on the purpose and meaning of life. Knowledge of religion will give our children the chance and encouragement to promote an ethos of respect for others, challenge stereotypes and realise the impact of faith. We encourage children to an active role in promoting a positive and inclusive school ethos that will later support children when they begin to enter the ever changing world they are growing up in.
At Watermead, we value a wide-ranging science education, which provides our children with a deep sense of the world around us. It also enables us to share theories on how humans came to exist. We will share an understanding of the three disciplines of science: biology, chemistry and physics. We will share an understanding of how the three disciplines of science are adapting and changing through new discoveries. We will place an importance of the development of scientific knowledge and skills. Awe and wonder will be at the centre of our scientific enquires maximising opportunities for incidental learning.
We will encourage children to be curious about Spain, Spanish culture and the language spoken. Children will be knowledgeable about the similarities and differences between Spain and nearby countries. The children will participate in verbal and practical learning whilst incorporating drama confidently when demonstrating to their peers. At Watermead we aim for all children to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources. They will become inspired to travel to Spanish speaking countries with intent for future aspirations.
