EYFS Curriculum Intent

At Oasis Academy Watermead we pride our Early Years on nurturing a holistic learner. Children will explore their own developing levels of curiosity through the awe and wonder of their environments. We embed the three prime areas of learning by immersing children in joyful experiences, reflecting and deepening their diverse and multi-cultural lives. We provide a broad range of real life experiences in order to build the foundation level of skills to take children to their next steps and beyond.

Through an engaging, vibrant environment, strong relationships are fostered in a safe space, where there are no outsiders with joy at our hearts. We address topics such as ‘in the beginning’, ‘when I grow up’ and ‘growing curiosity,’ that strengthen their identity, developing ‘who am I and who am I becoming?’

Our curriculum is planned to reflect our diverse community rooted in communication and language development whilst developing PSED skills. We drive to achieve end of year Early Learning Goals whilst becoming, independent, well-rounded members of the community. In the EYFS all children will be supported to achieve their true potential in an environment where there are no outsiders with joy at the heart of our journey to success.

Our curriculum intent’s focus is on a ‘Knowledge to skill’ goal using a holistic approach to combine all areas of learning from the Early Years Framework, to ‘build a mathematician, a reader and a writer’. We provide the opportunity for children to explore their passions and interests both inside and outside through real life experiences to learn and rehearse knowledge to be able to apply this through taught skills. Our teaching takes place through a combination of adult directed and child led opportunities that progress as children near their next milestone. The curriculum is broken down into termly milestones progressing from 3-5 years, including the transition to year 1.

We have carefully considered cultural capital experiences that support children’s understanding of the world around them and how they communicate within it at all developmental ages. This focus is paramount to ensure all children have a firm foundation to build upon given their varied starting points. The Habits are firmly embedded as we explore weekly sessions, link our challenges to Habits and their qualities and plan quality texts that foster this ethos.

Our Nursery has 26 places per sessions and sessions run from 8:30-11:30 and 12:15-3:15. Children can access 30 hour or 15 hour places and we offer a variety of combinations.
